The 4th International Otolith Symposium (IOS), is the next in a series of highly informative and practical meetings on the science of calcified structures (typically otoliths).  This international meeting brings together researchers and resource managers to review the current status of the research and its applicability to fisheries management.  This will be the fourth symposium in the series.  The last symposium in 2004 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, had over 265 oral and poster presentations and was attended by more than 300 delegates from at least 31 countries, including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, China, Japan, Russia, France, Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.  This meeting is organized into five themes: Age and Growth Estimation and Validation, Physiology, Chemical Composition, Schlerochronology, and Life History and Fisheries Management, and will include plenary, oral, and poster sessions, and perhaps workshops over the 5-day period.  Proceedings from the symposium will be published in a special volume of the Environmental Biology of Fishes.
