Good News

Dr. Ruth Francis-Floyd has received the "IAAAM William Medway Award for Excellence in Teaching" from The International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine.  This very high honor was awarded via Polycom from Rome on May 13, 2008.  This award is given to an individual who, in his/her activities within the past 10 years, has made a significant impact on teaching aquatic sciences.  Congratulations, Ruth!  (Picture at right, below)

Tom Frazer has been named a UF Foundation Research Professor, in recognition of his nationally recognized research dealing with freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems and their responses to anthropogenic stressors. The three-year professorships recognize faculty members who have established a distinguished record of research and scholarship that is expected to lead to continued distinction in the field.

Craig Watson received an award from Coastal America, a partnership of 15 departments and agencies under the US President, for his collaborative work with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Coral Protection and Restoration Program. The annual award recognizes programs and their participants who provide an impact regarding conservation and protection of the nation’s coastal resources. (picture at right, below)

Another Award for Craig Watson!  On Feb. 11, Craig received one of the U.S. Aquaculture Society/World Aquaculture Society's highest honors - the Distinguished Service Award - during the Plenary Session at the Aquaculture America/U.S.A.S./ World Aquaculture Society meeting in Orlando, FL.

"The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding personal contributions to the U.S. WAS Chapter and/or the U.S. aquaculture industry. This award emphasizes significant leadership and overall impact in research, education, extension, or industry development in the field of aquaculture."

Paula Viveros, a PhD student working under the guidance of Professor Ed Phlips, received a NSF Fellowship Award under the South East Alliance for Graduate Education and Professorship Program (SEAGEP). The award will support her research on coastal marine phytoplankton.

Heather Hamlin and Tina Crosby won first and second place oral presentation awards at the World Aquaculture Conference in San Antonio, TX.  Faculty advisors are Ruth Francis-Floyd and Denise Petty. ( Picture of Heather receiving her award on Student Awards page.)

Dr. Ed Phlips was awarded a 2007 Research Opportunity Seed Grant from the University, to promote interdisciplinary research on bioaccumulation, transfer and fate of algal toxins. Co-PIs are Shirley Baker, Patrick Baker, Deb Murie, Daryl Parkyn, Anita Wright (Food Science and Human Nutrition) and Denise Petty (FAS and College of Veterinary Medicine.)

Roger Rottmann Memorial Scholarship:  Matt Catalano and Kevin Thompson (2008). This award is given each year to an outstanding student in Florida American Fisheries Society (AFS).

Paul Anderson was selected as the Sea Grant Association Award Winner  (May, 2008) by Sea Grant Association and the United States Aquaculture Society (a Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society). Focus on Success

Dr. Rikki Grober-Dunsmore, who graduated in 2005 under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Frazer, accepted the position of National System Ecologist. She is based at the NMFS/SWFSC Lab in Santa Cruz, where she has been serving as a joint Postdoctoral Fellow (National Marine Fisheries Service, Santa Cruz Lab and the National Marine Protected Areas Center) . Congratulations, Rikki!
