Professional Goal: To further our state of knowledge on environmental physiology, sensory biology, and ecology of diadromous and migratory marine fishes; groups containing many of the most economically important fishes.

EDUCATION

1998. Ph.D., Department of Biology, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada

1984. B.Sc., Department of Zoology, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada

EMPLOYMENT:
Current Position:, Research Assistant Professor, Dept. of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, University of Florida
CURRENT RESEARCH

I am currently conducting research into environmental physiology, sensory biology and neuroethology, and ecology of Gulf of Mexico sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus de sotei), white grunt (Haemulon plumieri), red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), and sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus). Research includes:

1. Environmental physiology of diadromous fishes: Metabolic oxygen demand of Gulf sturgeon to changes in water temperature and water velocity. Measurement of annual temperatures encountered by free-ranging Gulf of Mexico sturgeon using temperature recording archival tags.

2. Sensory biology and neuroethology: Coastal light environments and visual function of diadromous and warm-temperate marine fishes. Salinity preference and its implications for success of hatchery introductions of red drum.

3. Fisheries Ecology: Identification of critical winter feeding habitat and movements of Gulf sturgeon. Movements of hatchery introduced red drum using ultrasonic telemetry and recaptures. Age, growth, and population dynamics of reef fishes. Development of non-lethal methods for aging protected and valuable catch and release sport fishes.
